The weight of jewelry items is expressed in grams. But other units of measurement may also be used. The below table shows some units for expressing precious metal weight.

Unit Description
Ounce (abbreviated oz) Equals 28.35 grams and is 1⁄16 of a common avoirdupois pound
Pennyweight (abbreviated dwt) Equals 1.55 grams and is 0.054857 avoirdupois ounce
Gram (abbreviated g) 1 avoirdupois pound equals 453.59 g
Milligram (abbreviated mg) 1 mg is 1/1000 of a gram, thus 1 g equals 1000 mg
Pound (abbreviated lb) 1 avoirdupois pound equals 16 avoirdupois ounce and equals 453.59 g
Carat (abbreviated C, c, ct) Equals 0.2 g or 200 mg
Note that it is different from Karat which is used to express purity.

When buying jewelry you should know the approximate metal weight of the jewelry item. This will help you assess the value of the item. In summary, the heavier the jewelry item, the more valuable it is, as it contains more amounts of precious metals.
